MANILA, Philippines – A teenager was shot dead near a voters’ registration center in Lanao del Sur on Thursday morning.
Said Guro, 17, was found dead some 500 meters from a voters’ registration center in Lumbaca-Unayan town at around 6 a.m.
Guro’s assailants were able to escape.
Authorities tightened the security in the area following the incident.
Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) Assemblywoman Samira Gutoc-Tomawis expressed dismay over the latest incident of violence in the region.
“Talagang masakit [ang pangyayaring ito]…just because of registration magkamatayan na tayo,” she said.
A re-listing of voters is ongoing for the entire ARMM, in an effort by the Commision on Elections to cleanse the bloated voters’ list.
The list is believed to be fraught with voters who are underaged, registered in multiple areas, or already dead.
The general voters’ registration started last July 9 and will end on July 18.
The first major incident of violence during the registration erupted Wednesday in Basilan where six people were killed while 22 others, including two militiamen, were wounded in an ambush by suspected Islamic militants. – report from Ronnie Enderes, ABS-CBN News Iligan
