MANILA, Philippines – An unconventional salon in Laoag City is standing out not because of its outlandish hairstyles or out-of-this-world make-up but because of its all-male hair stylists, who dare to defy stereotypes.
Unlike the usual salon staffed by women and gays, at this establishment, the beauticians are red-blooded men.
"May nag-advise sa akin na maganda nga daw 'yung gupit nila dito," said Michelle, one of the clients of Red-G Salon.
The idea for the salon started as a joke between the owner, Regie Pastor, and his close friends.
Their first shop was set up in a garage but they have since moved in to a bigger place.
“Nag-start ako bilang tambay tapos na-encourage ako ng tropa ko na gumupit din. Natutunan ko na rin hanggang sa nag-aral ako,” said Pastor.
They offer the usual services that can be found in other beauty parlors like rebonding, hair spa, hot oil treatment and hair tattoo.
Pastor and his friends said the learning curve wasn't that hard.
“Parang passion na din ito, makaka-pagcreate ka ng iba’t-ibang gupit,” said Jojo Panulo, one of the hairstylists.
Another hairstylist, Darren Acar, admits he gets teased a lot about his job but he is not the least embarrassed.
The group wants their salon to become known to prove that real men also know a thing or two about making others beautiful. -- Reports from April Rafales, ABS-CBN News; ANC
