MANILA, Philippines – Three people were injured after a policeman fired shots at a group of poll registrants in Lanao del Sur last Tuesday.
PO1 Abdul Hani Balt allegedly opened fire at some people during the general registration for the 2013 elections at around 9 a.m. at the municipal hall of Bayang.
The victims were identified as Aldein Balt, Usman Alayudan and Usof Tattoy Eman.
Police have launched an operation to capture Balt.
Meanwhile, in Butig town, a stronghold of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), registration proceedings were suspended after a group of men threatened some election officers by showing off their firearms.
In Saguiaran town, three suspected kidnappers were arrested after they were seen registering for the elections.
The suspects were identified as Lito Acasar, Macud Acasar at Langagun Acasar.
The general registration is ongoing for the entire Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). It started last July 9 and will run until July 18. It aims to cleanse the region’s bloated list of voters.
The list is believed to be fraught with voters who are underaged, registered in multiple areas, or already dead.
The first major incident of violence during the registration erupted Wednesday in Basilan where six people were killed while 22 others, including two militiamen, were wounded in an ambush by suspected Islamic militants. – with a report from Roxanne Arevalo, ABS-CBN News Iligan
