MANILA – A potential cyclone near Luzon may hit land this weekend, a state weather bureau forecaster said.

Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) forecaster Gener Quitlong said a low pressure area (LPA) east of Aurora may hit Tuguegarao in Cagayan tomorrow, July 5.

PAGASA said as of 4 a.m., the LPA was located 28 kilometers east of Baler, Aurora.

Quitlong said due to the combined effects of the LPA and southwest monsoon (habagat), almost the entire Luzon will experience rainy weather Friday until Saturday.

''Hindi lang po sa Metro Manila [magiging maulan]. Halos buong Luzon iyan dahil yan sa pinagsamang epekto ng LPA at saka habagat. Magpapatuloy iyan ngayong araw dahil lalong lumalapit itong LPA at baka bukas mag-landfall sa Tuguegarao area at saka malusaw,'' Quitlong told dzMM.

Meanwhile, Quitlong said the LPA will also be followed by a tropical depression. He said the the tropical depression is still outside the Philippine area of responsibility and may intensify into a storm as it approaches the country.

Quitlong, however, said based on forecast models, the weather disturbance is not likely to hit the Philippine landmass.

''Susunod po ito sa LPA. Hangga't nandyan ang LPA, hindi ito papasok. Ang pagkakaiba nito, bago makalapit sa Northern Luzon, kukurba na iyan papunta ng Japan. So hindi ito magla-landfall base sa mga forecast models,'' he said.

In its 24-hour weather forecast for Friday, PAGASA said Metro Manila, the regions of Ilocos, Cordillera, Cagayan Valley and Central Luzon will have moderate to occasionally heavy rains and thunderstorms which may trigger floods and landslide.

The rest of Luzon and Mindanao will be cloudy with light to moderate rains and thunderstorms.

Visayas will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rains or thunderstorms.
