MANILA, Philippines – A Dutch missionary was gunned down by unidentified suspects inside his office in Angeles City, Pampanga Tuesday afternoon, police said.
The victim, identified as 67-year-old Wilhelm Gertman of non-government organization Alay Bayan Inc., died on the spot after he was shot in the back by one of the gunmen.
The suspects also took the victim’s bag, which reportedly contained more than P1 million.
However, police have yet to confirm if robbery was the motive behind the attack.
His colleagues suspect that the assailants killed Gertman because of his initiatives as the executive director of disaster relief group Alay Bayan.
Gertman is also an anti-mining advocate.
“Malinaw na may taong nasa likod nito dahil may mga nakakabangga siya sa mga pinaglalaban niya,” said Lorena Villareal, program coordinator of Alay Bayan.
Gertman was with two others, Bernie Basangan and Ranilo Margallo, at the time of the incident but only the Dutch national was shot.
Police said the suspects escaped using a motorcycle.
Investigations are still ongoing, as of posting. -- Report from Jayvie Dizon, ABS-CBN News Pampanga
