MANILA, Philippines – Two people allegedly involved in gunrunning were arrested in a raid in Barangay Semba in Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao Tuesday afternoon.
Police recovered from the suspects 3 Berretta handguns, a caliber .45, MK43 , M60 machine gun, a caliber .50, one hand grenade and 16 pieces of 7.62 caliber.
The suspects, who have yet to be named, are reportedly visiting from Zamboanga City and had been staying at the residence of a certain Sahara Abas for 5 days.
The village chairman said it was the first time he saw the suspects.
The raid was conducted by officers of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG)-ARMM and the Philippine National Police-Special Action Force by virtue of a search warrant issued by Judge Bansawan Ibrahim.
CIDG said the raid was also conducted as part of their campaign against loose firearms, in connection with the forthcoming general voter’s registration in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao from July 9 to 18.
The seized weapons will undergo macro etching to determine if the firearms were owned by government forces. -- Report from Lore Mae Andong, ABS-CBN News Central Mindanao
