MANILA, Philippines – Thirteen fishermen were rescued off the coast of Ballesteros, Cagayan after their vessel sank at around 2 p.m. Wednesday.
One of the fishermen said their fishing boat capsized after it was repeatedly hit by strong waves.
The boat’s owner, a certain Edgar, was with the group and was saved using the boat’s only life jacket.
The fishermen were immediately able to contact their relatives through their cellphones.
They said it took 2 hours for the Coast Guard rescue team to locate them.
The Coast Guard said fishing has been prohibited in the area since Monday due to bad weather.
The fishermen, however, explained that they were not advised when they left the shores of Fuga Island in Aparri. -- Report from Mary Soliva, ABS-CBN News Cagayan Valley
