7 soldiers killed in Sulu clash vs Abu Sayyaf
ZAMBOANGA CITY - At least seven soldiers were killed while 10 others were wounded after a military detachment in Sulu was harassed by suspected members of the Abu Sayyaf Group early Thursday morning.
Brigadier General Martin Pinto, commander of Task Force Sulu, confirmed the death of a military officer and six enlisted personnel. He refused to divulge any further details.
Sources from the province said the detachment of the Army's Joint Special Operations Group in Sitio Minjay, Barangay Kabbuntakas, Patikul town was fired upon by the suspects.
Five soldiers were immediately killed in the attack.
Responding military units engaged the armed group in a fierce firefight.
The Western Mindanao Command has not issued any statements as of this time.
