MANILA, Philippines – A government soldier was killed by the New People’s Army (NPA) in an encounter in Sipalay City, Negros Occidental on Monday, a military official said.
The slain soldier was identified as Pfc. John Ilisan, a member of a team from the 47th Infantry Battalion.
Maj. Enrico Gil Ileto, spokesman of the Army's 3rd Infantry Division, said the troops were doing peace and development efforts in Camindangan Village in Sipalay City.
Ileto said Ilisan and another soldier were buying food at a store in Sitio Camboguiot when Ilisan was shot dead by NPA rebels at around 8 a.m.
Ileto said the two soldiers were unarmed and not in uniform at the time of the incident.
Meanwhile, a police volunteer was also killed in Zamboanga del Sur in another clash with NPA rebels in Barangay San Isidro in Bayog town at around 8:30 a.m. Monday, said 1st Infantry Division spokesman Capt. Albert Caber.
The victim was identified as Guillermo VIllacrusis, who was hunting wild pigs with two other police volunteers when the incident took place.
One of the volunteers, identified as Wilson Torres, was wounded in the attack.
Caber said the PNP is coordinating with military troops in the area to conduct hot pursuit operations against the perpetrators who escaped towards Barangay Balumbunan and Matun-og, also in Bayog town.
