COTABATO CITY - Six students of Resa National High School in Barangay Matuber, Datu Blah Sinsuat, Maguindanao were rescued after their pumpboat capsized due to strong waves on Wednesday morning.
Department of Education - Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (DepEd-ARMM) Secretary Atty. Jamar Kulayan identified the students as Amraida Ali, Asmia Ayunan, Raida Daud, Vivian Akmad, Sara Bagarian and Jehad Guianalan.
According to Kulayan, the students were on their way to school when strong waves hit their motorized boat, causing it to capsize at around 6 a.m.
The students were immediately rescued and brought to Cotabato Regional and Medical Center.
Two of the children experienced difficultly in breathing.
"Malakas ang alon kaninang umaga sa lugar kaya't tumaob at lumubog ang kanilang sinasakyang bangka. Pero nasa ligtas nang kalagayan ang mga estudyante. Ito kasi ang araw-araw nilang sinasakyan mula sa kanilang bahay patungo sa paaralan," Kulayan said.
The municipality of Datu Blah Sinsuat is an island town in the province of Maguindanao in which students need to ride a pumpboat in order to reach school.
The DepEd-ARMM is now planning to conduct geo-hazard mapping in the town in order to identify which areas are prone to accidents especially now that continuous rains are being felt in the province.
