CATANDUANES, Philippines - Catanduanes has been placed under a state of calamity because of the high number of diarrhea cases in the province.
The provincial government acted on a Department of Health recommendation to deal with the outbreak.
Local health officials said the number of diarrhea cases in the province reached 3,390 from January until June 16.
Many of the victims have been hospitalized.
Treatment is free for poor residents of Catanduanes.
The provincial government said it is high time that the water sources of some villages not reached by commercial water sources be fixed and upgraded. - report from Erick Baldo, ABS-CBN Bicol
