MANILA, Philippines – A state of calamity has been declared in the town of Glan in Sarangani after severe floods inundated several villages in the area.

Authorities said Barangay Cross was the worst-hit by the floods, with an estimated 250 families affected.

Schools in four barangays severely affected by the floods have called off classes.

Meanwhile, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office said 73 fishermen have been rescued but several others remain missing.

However, as many as 80 fishermen are still declared missing at sea.

The Philippine Coast Guard said these fishermen may have sailed before a warning was issued.

Coast Guard spokesperson Arman Balilo said they are in coordination with local government officials in informing fishermen about maritime warnings.

The strong rains are caused by a shallow low pressure area seen east of Northern Mindanao, according to the state weather bureau. -- Reports from Jay Dayupay, ABS-CBN News SOKSARGEN; ANC
