COTABATO CITY - Fishermen found a softshell turtle in the Alap River in Datu Paglas, Maguindanao on Monday afternoon.

Department of Environment and Natural Resources - Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (DENR-ARMM) Secretary Kahal Kedtag told ABS-CBN News that the softshell turtle is 23.4 centimeters long and weighs 1.5 kilograms.

Softshell turtles are considered endangered species. These are mostly found in Africa, Asia and North America.

Its scientific name is "pelochelys cumminggii." It belongs to the family of "trionychidae."

"Ito ay lumabas marahil dahil sa init ng panahon tapos biglang ulan. Siguro yung kanyang habitat at yung tinitirahan niya sa Liguasan Marsh ay nasira kaya natagpuan ng mga residente," Kedtag said.

The DENR-ARMM is now preparing to bring back the turtle to its habitat in Liguasan Marsh or place it in a zoo in order for it to be protected.
