TALISAY CITY, Cebu -- A six-year-old girl drowned in a remote lake area of Talisay City, Cebu on Saturday.
The victim was identified as Mariel Cabigas, who went to the lake for a swim with her siblings and cousins.
"The lake has very clear and cold waters and it's very deep. That's why many are tempted to swim," Barangay Captain Mary Ann Nolasco said.
The residents in the area believed that the child probably slipped on the lake's surface and fell to a deep spot.
The child's elder sister admitted that she was not watching over her sister.
"I was at the bottom of the lake and she was at the top. The next thing I noticed was she was already drowning and floating," Charlene Cabigas said.
A certain Rubelyn Umboy, who was washing clothes near the lake, tried to pull the victim out of the water but failed as she doesn't know how to swim.
The child's father and cousin attempted to revive the child but was unsuccessful.
According to the child's mother Chona Cabigas, the children asked her permission to follow their father in the mountain, who at that time was making charcoal.
She was not aware that the children went to the lake.
This was the first drowning incident on Tapul Lake this year.
Barangay officials in the area are guarding the lake, which is now closed to the public.
The local government promised to shoulder the child's burial expenses.
