MANILA, Philippines – A mushroom found in Barangay Buttong in Laoag City is causing a stir with some of its portions mysteriously emitting smoke.

Ligaya Marcos, the owner of a dead tree where the mushroom sprang from, said she initially thought it was dust that she saw coming from the cap and gills of the fungus.

It was only later when Marcos realized that the mushroom was, in fact, emitting gusts of smoke.

For some residents like Adelyn and Mylene, the “smoking mushroom” might be more than what meets the eye—thinking that mythical creatures might be dwelling around the fungus.

Adelyn claimed that she got sick after mocking the “smoking mushroom.”

Mylene added that she once heard the mushroom “calling” her.

‘Not mysterious at all’

Meanwhile, biology professor Rodolfo Pinago of Northwestern University in Laoag, said the mushroom is anything but supernatural.

Pinago said the smoke emitting from the mushroom is just reflective of the fungus’ characteristic.

The professor also warned the residents to stay away from the mushroom.

He said the fungus, which falls under the saprophytic fungi qualification, is poisonous. – Report from Grace Alba, ABS-CBN News Laoag
