MANILA, Philippines - To give it more time to prepare for logistics, manpower, and security, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has decided to reschedule special elections in certain places in Lanao del Sur, Basilan, and Sarangani to June 3.
According to Resolution 8946, special polls will be held on June 3 in the following areas:
- Brgy. Poblacion in Gian, Sarangani
- All barangays in the towns of Sultan Domalondong, Lumba Bayabao, Masiu, Tubaran, Lumbaca-Unayan, Marogong, and Bayang in Lanao del Sur
- Brgys. Danapah, Kailih, Bato-Bato, Apil-Apil, Bucalao, Sangkahan, Cambug, and Look Bisaya in Al Barka, Basilan
- Brgys. Upper Mahayahay and Lower Mahayahay in Maluso, Basilan
Failure of elections was declared in these areas due to violence, defective Preinct Count Optical Scan (PCOS) machines, and absent members of the Board of Election Inspectors (BEI), among others.
Special elections were originally scheduled on May 28, but election officials in Lanao del Sur requested that the polls be moved because there are 8 other municipalities in the province where elections were not held.
They are asking that failure of elections also be declared and special elections be held in certain barangays in the following towns:
- Buadiposo Bontong
"The results of elections in the said municipalities will affect the results not only in the provincial level … but also in the municipal level," states the memorandum filed by Atty. Josllyn de Mesa, Atty. Maria Norina Tangaro-Casingal, and Atty. Maria Juana Valeza of Comelec-Lanao del Sur.
Other reasons cited in the memorandum are missing ballots in certain barangays in Lumbatan and Tugaya, unwilling and disqualified BEIs, PCOS machines already withdrawn by Smartmatic, the need for newly-designated BEIs to undergo training, and the need to review the manning of Comelec personnel at the municipal level.
The Comelec will hear petitions and reports before declaring failure of elections in those areas.
