MANILA – The Department of Health (DOH) plans to rebuild the Davao Mental Hospital, which was razed by fire on Wednesday.

DOH Assistant Secretary Elmer Punzalan said a budget of P500 million has been allocated to rebuild the hospital even before the fire hit.

"Actually, before this thing happened, we already have budget allocation for this," Punzalan said.

The structure will also be renovated to upgrade the facilities and equipment.

Punzalan and Region 11 Director Dr. Abdullah Dumama visited the hospital on Thursday.

Punzalan commended the personnel of the mental facility who are now working under makeshift tents as office.

The DOH has discharged 36 patients under the crisis intervention unit, while 19 patients were transferred to various private mental facilities.

All patients have been accounted for.

The Davao Mental Hospital, which was built in 1918, is the only mental facility in Mindanao and considered as one of the historical landmarks in the city. -- Report from Hernel Tocmo, ABS-CBN News Davao
