MANILA, Philippines – A grocery store in Mindanao fell victim to robbers while its owner was keenly watching the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona on Tuesday.

Around P8,000 worth of goods were carted away by thieves from a store in the town of Maco, Compostela Province.

“Nanonood kasi ako ng impeachment ni Corona, ‘di ko napansin na may nagnanakaw na pala sa tindahan. Noong hinabol namin, nakasakay na,” said owner Maria Teresita Rotimas.

Four closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras installed at the establishment captured the robbery, but the owner failed to monitor the footage since she was watching the trial.

Corona testified in his own impeachment trial on Tuesday and spoke for nearly 3 hours. His sudden exit from the session hall caused a commotion and spiked interest in the real political drama.

The store’s vendor Manilyn Ampila said she was distracted by an accomplice of the robbers while the suspects robbed the place.

Police said the CCTV footage will be used to identify the suspects. -- Report from Vina Araneta, ABS-CBN News Southern Mindanao
