MANILA, Philippines – A policeman who carried out a robbery was killed in Surigao del Sur last Friday.

He was identified as PO1 Arnold Olvida from Mati, Davao Oriental

Police said he was with four other armed suspects who robbed a store owned by Nomeriano Curada in Barangay Burgos, Cortes town. They took with them cash, pieces of jewelry and a cellphone.

The suspects also tried to seize a motorcycle from bystanders Tomas and Vincent Bernales.

Both, however, refused to surrender the motorcycle, forcing one of the suspects to fire shots.

Tomas was shot by one of the suspects. Vincent, on the other hand, was pummeled in the face with a gun.

The suspects also tried to fire shots at Master Sergeant Eleno Leopoldo, a member of the Army’s 58th Infantry Battalion, who was merely passing by the area. He was able to dodge the bullets.

Leopoldo fired back and killed Olvida, and wounded another, identified as Tomie Olvida.

Police recovered a 9 millimeter pistol, a .45-caliber pistol and P13,000 cash at the crime scene.

Tomas, Vincent and Tomie were rushed to the hospital.

Police are now hunting the three other suspects who were able to escape. – report from Trini Velasco, ABS-CBN News Caraga
