QUEZON – Four kids died in a fire which razed a house in Sitio Ibaba, Barangay Bulakin in Dolores, Quezon on Friday night.

According to initial reports, 6 children, unattended by an adult, were inside the house when the fire broke out. Their parents were working in San Pablo City, Laguna.

Authorities identified the fatalities as Ella Medrano, 8; John Mark Medrano, 6; Mark Leo Rebenito, 4; and Jasmine Rebenito, 1.

Thirteen-year-old Joan Medrano was able to get out of the house to ask for help, along with Jasper Rebenito, 6, who suffered burns.

“Grabe inabot ng bata. Apat na bata. Hindi naman sinasabing sinadya. Wala naman ako masisi. Hindi naman natin masasabing sinadya dahil naghahanapbuhay nga ang mga magulang para may maibigay sa mga bata,” Conegunda Rebenito, grandmother of two of the fatalities, said.

According to reports, the children were using a candle for lighting, after power supply of the house was cut sometime on Friday

“Yung kandila ipinatong sa Durabox. Nakatulugan nila. Yung Durabox syempre may lamang damit. Nasunog,” SFO2 Manuel Claveria, chief of the Bureau of Fire Protection in Dolores, said.

Claveria said the house, which was made of light materials, was razed to the ground in just 10 minutes.
“Kinakaya pa naman kahit papano. Hindi ko alam kung paano gagawin,” Raphael Rebenito, father of Mark Leo and Jasmine, said. – From a report by Ernie Manio, ABS-CBN News Southern Tagalog
