MANILA, Philippines - General Santos City has a new mayor.
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Tuesday proclaimed former councilor Ronnel Rivera as the new city mayor, beating veteran incumbent Darlene Antonino-Custodio.
The Antonino clan is an old political dynasty in South Cotabato.
Rivera had 93,525 votes, while Custodio, who once defeated Manny Pacquiao in the 2007 elections, got 79,083 votes.
Meanwhile, Shirlyn Banas defeated Boyet Leyson in the race for city vice-mayor.
The Comelec also proclaimed 12 city councilors.
Rivera's camp said city residents wanted change.
The new city mayor, the son of a tuna fishing magnate, was described by a MindaNews report on Tuesday as "Pacquiao's bet".
