MANILA, Philippines – A 62-year-old doctor was murdered inside his own home in Barangay Alijis, Bacolod City Thursday night by 2 men he befriended on social networking site Facebook.
Victim Andres Gumban Jr. was found lying in a pool of blood after being stabbed repeatedly by suspects Niel John Destriza and Fof Pascual.
A neighbor, Jonathan Maniego, said he heard someone screaming for help past 10 p.m. When he went to investigate, he said he saw the suspects stabbing the doctor.
“Nakita kong pinagtutulungan ang biktima ng dalawa. Tapos sumigaw ako para humingi ng tulong. Sinigawan ko ang 2 na tama na! Agad naman silang lumabas,” he said.
Residents then ganged up on Destriza and Pascual and beat them up.
Destriza, however, said it was Gumban who tried to molest them after inviting them to his home.
The 2 said the doctor had befriended them on Facebook for a week before inviting them to his home for drinks.
Destriza said he was surprised when Gumban suddenly went to the restroom and threatened him with a knife with the intent of raping him.
“Wala akong magawa kasi nag-aagawan kami ng kutsilyo. Alangan naming hayaan ko siyang saksakin ako. Marami nga akong sugat…Lumabas ako pero sinundan pa rin niya ako. Marami na siyang sugat,” he said.
Pascual corroborated Destriza’s story, saying he heard a commotion inside the restroom.
“Nag-aagawan sila ng kutsilyo sa loob ng banyo. Naka-lock ang CR. Kinabahan ako. Hindi ko alam ang gagawin,” he said.
Gumban’s brother, Arnaldo, denied the suspects’ stories, saying his brother would not commit a crime inside his own home.
“That’s impossible. Hindi marunong mang away ang kapatid ko tapos palalabasin pang gusto silang i-harass sa loob mismo ng bahay ng doctor,” he said.
Police said the 2 might have tried to rob the doctor, who then fought back.
“We can’t confirm if robbery was a motive because the suspects went inside the house and they knew the doctor,” Chief Inspector Levy Pangue said.
He said they will investigate if the 2 had other companions and if there are missing items in the house. Report by Nico Delfin, ABS-CBN Bacolod
