ANGELES CITY, Philippines - Fearing his killers, only a handful of people turned up at the burial of Alfred Mendiola, the star witness in the murder of car dealer Venson Evangelista.

Justice Secretary Leila de Lima was among the few who came to pay their last respects to Mendiola.

No mass was held for Mendiola, and only a simple blessing was offered by his family in Angeles City on Thursday morning.

Only a few people attended his wake because his relatives and friends are still afraid of his killers.

De Lima went to Mendiola's wake Wednesday night.

"Sweet siya. Lagi niya akong tine-text everyday. Masaya naman ang experiences namin sa kanya, kaso naisalba sana siya kung nakinig lang siya sa amin," she said.

Alfred's mother managed to rein in her emotions during the funeral.

The family's spokesman said they are hoping his killing will not go unsolved.

"We leave it to the prosecution yung mga susunod na hakbang," lawyer Willie Rivera said. - report from Gracie Rutao, ABS-CBN News Pampanga; ANC
