LAGUNA – Four construction workers died and ten others were injured when the truck they were riding plunged into a ravine in Majayjay town early Friday, police said.

Senior Inspector Marcelito Marcial, Majayjay Police chief, identified the fatalities as Ronald Grencio, Rolan Grencio, Reynaldo Millet and Elmer Mareveles.

The fatalities were residents of Barangays San Miguel and Talortor in Majayjay.

Injured were Ricky Grencio, Rafael Empoy, Benjan Asmiller, Angel Tanauan, Jolas Rocero, Romeo Revillosa, Roel Rocero, Efren Iriga, Roberto Locag and truck driver Domingo Arsulacia.

They were initially brought to Majayjay Hospital and later transferred to Laguna Provincial Hospital.

Marcial said the victims were employees of Engr. Orland Jasildo, owner of Orguer Trading and Construction.

Investigators said the victims were on their way to Sariaya, Quezon for a construction project, onboard an Isuzu Elf truck (VCF 623), when the driver lost control of the vehicle.

The truck plunged into an 8-meter-deep ravine in Barangay Ilayang Banga at around 5:30 a.m.

''Zigzag road kasi yon sa gilid ng bundok, although cemented, delikado parin doon pag nawalan ka ng control,'' Marcial said in a phone interview.

Marcial said investigators have yet to determine whether the accident was due to human error or mechanical failure.
