MANILA (UPDATED) - At least four inmates were killed while 17 others were wounded after they were shot by jail guards at the Quezon Provincial Jail in Lucena City on Wednesday morning.
According to the Lucena police, around 100 inmates armed with improvised guns and bladed weapons were protesting the transfer of a fellow inmate to another cell.
The said inmate was identified as Antonio Satumba, leader of the Sputnik Gang.
This triggered the jail guards to open fire at the inmates, police said.
The shooting incident occurred at around 10 a.m.
All wounded inmates were brought to the Quezon Medical Center for treatment.
The four fatalities were identified as Gary Enggera, Jose Umali Escasa, Christian Contemplacion and Manuelito Palma.
Among those injured were:
- Jason Magpantay
- Nelson Escullar
- Adolfo De Mesa
- Ricky Ramos
- Jose Cotonzales
- Rommel Falcon
- Alberto Perez
- Francis Kabutihan
- Michael Angcaco
- Ronon Abordo
Some civilians who were visiting some inmates were reportedly trapped earlier after the jail went into lock down mode after the incident.
Authorities said the situation is now under control.
Satumba has also already been transferred to another cell.
Last February, tension also gripped the jail after inmates allegedly took hostage relatives who visited them. -- Reports from Johnny Glorioso and Ronilo Dagos, dzMM
