MANILA – A candidate for mayor in San Jose, Tarlac was shot dead on Monday afternoon.
The victim, 74-year-old Rudy Abella, was at a campaign sortie in Sitio Santa Cruz in Barangay Iba when at least two men shot him at around 5 p.m.
"Nag-sasalita ako, noong narinig ko na may pumutok. Nakatingin ako sa gunman pero hindi ko siya gaano makita," said vice mayoralty bet Judy Laurzano, who was with Abella during the sortie.
Gubernatorial bet Pearl Pacada, the province's incumbent vice governor, condemned the killing of Abella.
"Lalawigan ito ni PNoy (President Benigno Aquino III). Hindi dapat magkaroon ng karahasan dito," Pacada said.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) has formed a task force to investigate the killing of Abella, who entered politics as a barangay chairman after retiring from the police service. – report from John Germono, ABS-CBN News North Central Luzon
