MANILA, Philippines – Five government soldiers were killed and 2 others were wounded in an encounter with New People’s Army (NPA) rebels Saturday morning, authorities said.
The soldiers were conducting pursuit operations when they clashed with a group of armed rebels in Sitio Umas, Brgy. Camindangan, Sipalay City, Negros Occidental at around 7:40 a.m.
The gunfight lasted for more than an hour before the rebels withdrew.
Authorities have yet to determine if there are any casualties from the NPA side.
Military officials said the same group raided the Philex Mining Corp. office also in Brgy. Camindangan on Friday and torched several equipment as well as 2 employee bunkhouses.
Joint forces of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police are continuing its pursuit operations against the gunmen.
“The perpetrators shall be identified and will be charged accordingly with appropriate criminal cases in court,” Capt. Leo Christopher Cunanan, public affairs officer of the 303rd Infantry Brigade, said in a statement.
