DAVAO – Two inmates of the Bansalan Police Station in Davao Del Sur escaped from their detention cell Friday night, police said.

The escapees were identified as Kamad Mangelen and James Lapis.

Authorities said Mangelen was charged of violating Republic Act 9165 known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 after being arrested of selling illegal drugs in Bansalan last March 23, 2013.

Lapis, on the other hand, is facing charges of robbery.

Sr. Insp. Milgrace Driz, station commander of the Bansalan Police, said Mangelen and Lapis escaped at around 6:30 p.m. by using a hacksaw blade to cut the bars during a blackout.

Driz admits that there were lapses on the part of the jail guard.

Police said investigations and hot pursuit operations are ongoing.
