Capiz town vice mayor shot dead

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) – The vice mayor of Mambusao, Capiz was shot dead by a lone gunman Friday morning.

Police said Vice Mayor Abel Martinez was gunned down in front of his house along Rizal Street in Barangay Poblacion Proper by a lone assailant at around 6:30 a.m.

Martinez was declared dead on arrival at Mambusao Hospital.

Several residents said they saw the gunman shoot Martinez six times. Five empty bullet shells from a .45 caliber pistol were recovered at the crime scene.

The suspect was then fetched by a man on a motorcycle and sped off toward Jamindan town.

Martinez's relatives believe politics was behind the murder. They said Martinez had revealed that he was once approached by a man and told him not to run fo re-election in 2013 anymore.
