MANILA, Philippines – Five men were killed after attempting to ambush several policemen in Barangay San Lorenzo, Lallo town in Cagayan on Tuesday afternoon.

Senior Inspector Ramon Macarubbo, head of Lallo Police, said a green sedan carrying five men was seen following the police's Mitsubishi L300 van. The police were from Abra, including Abra Police provincial director Senior Superintendent Alexander Rafael.

The policemen, after noticing that they were being followed, ordered the suspects to stop their car, but the latter instead fired shots at the van, forcing the police to fire back.

The exchange of fire lasted around 5 minutes.

Two of the slain suspects were identified as Michael Bermudez from Baguio and Nomer Biendima from Abra.

The police recovered two armalites and a .45 caliber pistol from the slain suspects.

An investigation was launched to determine the motive behind the failed ambush. – report from Mary Soliva, ABS-CBN News Cagayan
