Scavengers up in arms over ban in Rizal landfill
MANILA – Tension arose between scavengers and personnel of the Rizal Provincial Sanitary Landfill in Barangay San Isidro, Rodriguez on Tuesday after garbage trucks were not allowed to enter the facility.
More than 200 scavengers blocked the gate as they protested an imposed ban in the landfill, where four were killed due to a “trash slide.”
“Napakahirap ng inaabot namin dahil sa ginagawa nila sa amin. Hindi kami nakakapaglahig, paano po ‘yung mga anak namin, hindi nakakakain,” said one of the scavengers, Rosalia Saak.
Officials of the landfill, meanwhile, said they did not allow scavengers to enter the landfill for the past two weeks for their safety.
After a brief dialogue, the officials agreed to open the landfill to them starting Wednesday.
“Gusto lang namin may koordinasyon sila sa barangay para kung ano man ang mangyari at magkaroon man ng hindi natin inaasahang pangyayari, alam ng barangay,” said Rizal landfill OIC Domelito Cai.
Authorities have recovered the bodies of Gary Balahibo, Eddie Malano and Rubidico Olog from the deadly trash slide.
The fourth casualty remains missing. -- Reports from Abner Mercado, ABS-CBN News; Charlie Mendoza, dzMM
