DUMAGUETE – A security guard was killed in front of his family in Barangay Banilad, Dumaguete City Tuesday morning.
The victim, Anecito Edrea Jr., from Siaton, Negros Oriental was with his wife and two children on board a bus from their town going to Dumaguete City.
“Habal-habal” driver Gabriel Flores Jr., who witnessed the incident, said he approached the family thinking that they might need a ride somewhere, but Edrea declined saying that they are waiting for someone.
"After 5 minutes, two men on board a motorcycle approached them. The back rider pointed a gun at Edrea and then a sound of gunshot followed. We saw the victim drop to the ground while his family called for help," Flores said.
Edrea was brought to the nearest hospital but was declared dead on arrival. Edrea sustained a gunshot in the back of his head and the bullet exited through his mouth.
The family of the victim refused to be interviewed by members of the media.
PO2 Roderick Mahipus, the investigator from Dumaguete City-Philippine National Police (PNP), said that the family had a problem regarding a property they sold in Siaton.
The family was supposed to meet one of Edrea’s sons when the incident happened. The PNP already have the names of the suspects, but refused to divulge them to the media as hot pursuit operation continues.
Aside from possible land dispute, they are also looking into the possibility that the incident might be politically motivated as the victim is a known campaign leader of a gubernatorial candidate.
