KALINGA – The mayor of Pasil, Kalinga was shot by a farmer after the local official's vehicle accidentally ran over the man's dog, police said Tuesday.
Pasil, Kalinga Mayor James Edduba was on his way home in Tabuk, Kalinga from an event in Cordillera when his vehicle hit a dog owned by suspect Kitkiti La-os Suyam of Barangay Lucog in Tabuk City.
"Pagbaba niya para tingnan yung aso, biglang dumating iyung suspect," said Supt. Davey Limmong of the Cordillera Police Regional Office.
Edduba said he heard gunshots, but did not immediately realize that he was shot.
"May narinig na lang ako tatlong gunshots, 'Bang! Bang! Bang!' Hindi ko alam na ako. Tapos may fluid na lumabas sa tiyan ko, dugo na pala," Edduba recalled.
He was hit by bullets from a .45 caliber handgun in the arm and stomach, police said. He was rushed to the Kalinga Provincial Hospital.
The suspect, meantime, surrendered to police.
"Nagkaroon ng hot pursuit. Pinuntahan natin yung mga posible niyang pinagtaguan. Humingi tayo ng tulong sa elders, pumayag naman siyang sumuko na lang," Limmong said.
Edduba said he will file a frustrated homicide case against the suspect.
"Mas better ‘yun para matuto siya ng leksyon," he said.
The suspect is now detained at the Kalinga Provincial Jail. - From a report by Mae Cornes, ABS-CBN News Northern Luzon
