Truck crushes trike in Negros; 3 women killed

NEGROS OCCIDENTAL, Philippines - Three people, including a pregnant woman, were killed when a truck crushed a tricycle that the victims were riding in Sagay City, Negros Occidental on Thursday morning, police said.

The bodies of the victims, who were all women, were retrieved from under the wreckage of their vehicle that was flattened by the truck weighing at least 23 tons.

The truck was heavily laden with harvested sugarcane, according to investigators.

The victims were identified as Rosita Alob, Indang Ilalim, and Aileen Alolon. 

The tricycle driver, Lito Ilalim, narrowly escaped death. 

He said he parked the tricyce on the side of the road to gas up when the truck passed by and suddenly overturned.

The truck driver, Alejandro Balaliji, has been arrested by Sagay City police.

Authorities said before the accident occurred, Balaliji was already given a traffic citation because his vehicle was overloaded.

He will be charged with reckless imprudence resulting in homicide. - Report from Yasmin Dormido, ABS-CBN News Negros
