ILOILO -- Residents of Barangay Sulangan in Dumangas, Iloilo fear the damage caused by quarrying activities in the historic Binaobao Cave.
An ongoing quarry activity has already extracted essential limestone reserves in the area near the the mouth of the cave.
According to the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), almost 90 percent of the cave is made of limestone.
Based on records from the local government of Dumangas, at least ten quarry operators are currently exploring the area.
The Binaobao Cave, according to local historians, was once used by local military officials during wars. It was also used by the Japanese as a hideout during the World War II.
Meanwhile, Mayor Rolly Distura said the quarry operators have a complete set of permits.
He added, however, that he would make a stand once the quarry operations affect the town's natural resources.
The mayor is set to meet with the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) to conduct an inspection in the area.
