ILOCOS NORTE -- Operatives of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) arrested the municipal civil registrar of Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte for extortion and estafa.
Investigation showed that the suspect, Mauro Malda, often asks money from residents who go to his office to have their names changed.
According to Restituto Jadulcopora, Malda asked P1,500 from him as processing fee for his child's change of name.
However, Malda failed to process his request.
Malda then asked Jadulcopora again for money, which resulted in another failure to process the latter's request.
Other victims also surfaced, all of whom paid processing fees without having their requests being processed.
Malda will be charged with violation of Republic Act No. 6713 or the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees, as well as Republic Act No. 3019 or the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act. -- report from April Rafales, ABS-CBN News Ilocos
