MANILA, Philippines – Forty-seven cases of acute gastroenteritis, also known as stomach flu, have been reported by the Region 1 Medical Center from April 1 to April 15, health officials said.
Authorities said acute gastroenteritis is the leading illness in children admitted at the hospital, with more cases than pneumonia and dengue.
Acute gastroenteritis is acquired by consuming contaminated water or food.
The illness is common during the summer as food spoils quickly in warm weather.
Health officials said if not properly treated, the illness can lead to dehydration that may cause death.
They advised the public to always ensure that drinking water and food are free from bacteria. -- Report from Joanna Tacason, ABS-CBN News Dagupan
