MANILA, Philippines - Motorists' tempers and patience were put to the test as the long weekend break caused heavy traffic at the southbound lane of Maharlika Highway in Calamba, Laguna.
Travelers headed to Bicol, Quezon, Laguna and Batangas were caught in traffic, which extended to about 7 kilometers as of 1 p.m. on Thursday.
"Sa dalawang oras, wala pang isang kilometro tinakbo ko. Kasi may mga nag-counterflow. Dapat dun sila sa tamang daan. Eh wala pang traffic enforcer," said Bunso Guyao who was en route to Pagbilao, Quezon with friends.
"Dati kaya ng isang oras ngayon dalawang oras na traffic wala pa ako sa kalahati," said an exasperated Rommel Flores, who was going to San Pablo, Laguna.
Some passengers were forced to leave the bus and just walk along the highway.
According to Batangas traffic enforcers, traffic was mainly caused by devotees going to Padre Pio church in Sto. Tomas, Batangas.
"Heavy traffic dahil sa dami ng namamanata sa simbahan ni Padre Pio sa may highway. Sinabayan pa ng maraming sasakyan na dumadaan para magbakasyon at umuuwi," Abrugena said in a text message.
