'Gun-for-hire group leader' nabbed at checkpoint
BATANGAS - Three people, including the alleged leader of a gun-for-hire group, were arrested at a checkpoint operation in Bauan town early Tuesday morning, police said.
Batangas Police Director Sr. Supt. Omega Jireh Fidel identified the suspects as Jamela Marie Solis, Jonas Abu and Jowel Reyes, the alleged leader of the Reyes Gun-for Hire group operating in Bauan and neighboring towns in Batangas.
Fidel said the suspects' car was flagged down by the police manning the checkpoint after they noticed the improvised plate attached to it at around 2:45 a.m.
Upon inspection of the vehicle, police were able to recover six .45-caliber pistols, a .38-caliber revolver, ammunition, and four sachets of suspected shabu weighing around 20 grams.
Police said Reyes, a former convict, is number 1 on the drug watchlist in Bauan town. He was also a suspect in the killing of 3 male scrap workers in Barangay San Teodoro in Bauan last month.
"Modus pa ng grupo ang magpapahiram ng mga baril sa mga triggerman kung may itutumba silang tao kapalit ang malaking halaga ng pera," Fidel said.
Fidel said they are still gathering other information and evidence to link the group to other killings in the province.
