NPA admits destroying mining firm's equipment
ILOCOS SUR - The Alfredo Cesar Command of the New People's Army (NPA)on Tuesday admitted to attacking a mining company in Sito Segseg, Barangay Patiacan, Quirino, Ilocos Sur.
The group, in a statement, said they burned down the company's drilling machine as retaliation for the what it called environmental damage caused by the company, as well as to show their support to residents who are against mining in the area.
"...to punish the said company for four years of destructive exploration and to support the community's overwhelming rejection of the extension of the company's exploration," said Armando Silva, spokesperson of the Alfredo Cesar Command.
Based on information received by the police, the rebels attacked the company after it failed to provide jobs and scholarships for the residents.
Ten armed men and four women attacked the mining site early morning last Friday. The group allegedly talked to the workers on site and asked them to stop working.
They set fire to the company's drilling machine, used to mine gold and diamonds, before immediately fleeing from the site.
The police are currently investigating the incident to determine what charges will be filed against the rebels.
