MANILA - A 6-year-old girl was rescued by authorities in Cabagan, Isabela 11 hours after she was taken hostage by her own father.
The suspect, Ricardo Guquing, took his daughter at knifepoint to a house in Barangay Balasig at around 7 a.m. on Sunday.
According to the house caretaker, Bernardo Banson, the suspect said he feared for their safety, claiming that someone was out to kill him.
The suspect then demanded that his wife be brought to him.
Police, local officials and relatives took turns trying to convince Guquing to release his daughter while operatives prepared to take him down.
Guquing's father, Dionicio, said the suspect had a mental breakdown.
At around 8 p.m., the suspect was finally convinced to surrender by Councilor Jun Baricaua.
The child was brought to the hospital after sustaining slight injuries in the neck and arms.
Meanwhile, Guquing, who remains in police custody, said he did not intend to hurt his daughter and that he regrets the incident. -- Report from Harris Julio, ABS-CBN News Cagayan Valley
