MANILA (UPDATED) - Eight people died and 16 others injured in a 5-vehicle collision in Diversion Road, Barangay Ma-a, Davao City on Saturday night.
An Isuzu Forward truck, a Toyota Tamaraw pick-up, a trailer truck, a Honda XRM and a Ford Escape were involved in the accident.
According to Talomo police chief Supt. Julius Silagan, the Forward truck, which was carrying rice, crashed into the Tamaraw pick-up, which was carrying over 20 passengers, in the northbound lane of the Diversion Road.
The Tamaraw pick-up then crashed into a trailer truck on the other lane, which in turn crashed into the Honda XRM.
The Forward truck, driven by a certain Kim Canque, was unable to immediately stop, and instead crashed into a Ford Escape before slamming into a traffic light.
The fatalities were identified as Teresa Baogbog, 62; Liza Baogbog, 60; Juanita Bete; Liza Baogbog; Rexey Dave Ali, 6; Jojo Cerintas; Dwayne Lester Cerintas, 2; and Zian Kyrie Roncal, 6 months old.
The eight casualties were all riding the Tamaraw pick-up, which came from a birthday party of a certain Decca Homes from Mintal District. The victims were on their way home when the accident occurred.
The 16 others who bore injuries are still being treated at a medical center, with many still in critical condition.
Canque, the driver of the Forward truck, immediately surrendered to the Talomo police.
