1 dead, 28 hurt in Cotabato bus accident
MANILA (UPDATED) – One person died while 28 others were injured in a bus accident in Glamang, Polomok, South Cotabato on Friday evening.
The fatality was identified as Nestle Joy Carumba, 21, an employee of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Region 12.
Initial investigation disclosed that the YBL bus was traveling fast when the driver suddenly stepped on the brakes to avoid a rough road ahead.
However, the driver was unable to control the bus. As a result, the vehicle tilted and eventually fell on its side.
Authorities said the accident happened at 7 p.m.
The bus, with body number A-118, was on its way to General Santos City.
Other injured passengers were brought to the nearest hospital and are still currently being treated.
The driver, identified as Chito Carael, fled after the accident but eventually surrendered to authorities.
"May pasahero kasing pumara, nabigla ako kaya naapakan ko anf preno. Hindi ko namalayan na hindi na pala level yung daan doon. Kaya nawalan ako ng kontrol sa manibela. Nauna na yung pwet ng sasakyan hanggang sa bumaligtad na kami," he told authorities.
The bus company said they will shoulder the medical expenses of all the victims,
Meanwhile the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board is looking into the issue and has yet to decide if it will sanction the said bus company.
"Titingnan natin kung may kasalanan talaga ang driver dahil kapag napatunayan, kailangan niya talagang managot. Alam naman natin, pag ganito ang sitwasyon, dapat cautious tayo, lalo na kung may mga pag-ulan so ang safety lessons dapat ina-apply natin," LTFRB Gensan chief Razul Rahman said.
