ILOILO CITY, Philippines – International flights may soon land at the new Iloilo Airport, said airport manager Alan Java.

Java said the new Iloilo Airport is equipped to handle international flights. He added that the 2.5-kilometer runway of the airport can accommodate an Airbus 320, the type of aircraft usually used by big airline companies.

The airport has also passed international standards.

However, Java understands that while the airport is well-equipped, other factors such as passenger traffic must be considered.

“While Iloilo Airport is ready, ang malalaking airlines market-driven 'yan. Hindi sila maglalagay ng rota kapag walang pasahero,” he said.

The airport must also undergo an expansion if it is opened to international flights.

Currently, Iloilo Airport services 42 domestic flights daily. -- Report from Kenneth Ladigohon, ABS-CBN News
