MANILA – Senator Grace Poe on Monday condemned the killing of a tabloid reporter in Cavite last Sunday.
"I strongly condemn the senseless, heinous murder of fearless journalist Ruby Garcia and the ignominy of gunning her down at her home and in full view of her granddaughter," said Poe, chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Information and Mass Media.
Rubylita Garcia, 52, was gunned down by two unidentified suspects inside her house in Bacoor City, Cavite on Sunday morning, police said.
Garcia was a provincial correspondent of Remate and the president of Campo Press Club.
Police have yet to establish the motive behind the shooting incident.
A member of the Campo Press Club revealed that Garcia had a spat with one of the police officers of Cavite last Wednesday. The reporter, however, declined to name the officer out of fear for her safety.
Poe is calling for swift justice for Garcia, especially that "there were witnesses and the murderers were brazen enough not to conceal their identities."
"We press for the timely resolution of cases of violence against journalists to serve as a stern warning to all in pursuit of justice, freedom of speech, and democracy," the senator said.
