MANILA, Philippines – A 12-hour hostage drama in Olongapo City ended Wednesday morning after police was able to disarm the hostage-taker.

Police said suspect Francisco Mamolo Jr. went inside a house in Barangay West Bajac-Bajac at around 6 p.m. Tuesday and took hostage a 15-year-old girl using a bolo knife.

Mamolo also hacked the neck of the victim’s boyfriend. Initial reports said the victim’s boyfriend is now in stable condition at the James L. Gordon Memorial Hospital.

The police finally seized the knife from Mamolo at around 6 a.m. on Wednesday.

The hostage victim was then sent to the hospital for a medical check-up.

Mamolo’s mother, Siony, said her son was hysterical before holding the victim hostage at the 2nd floor of the house.

She said her son was running after an unidentified man before entering the compound where the victim’s house was located.

Siony denied that her son is a drug addict, but suspects her son was drunk when he carried out the crime.

The police said they will look into the possibility that the suspect was suffering from a mental illness. – reports from Raffy Santos, ABS-CBN News; and Jeff Gallos, dzMM
