Soldier killed, 4 others hurt in firefight with NPA

DAVAO – One soldiers was killed while 4 other were injured in an hour-long firefight between government troops and suspected New People's Army (NPA) rebels in Sitio Tagsing, Barangay Panoraon, Maco in Compostela Valley on Wednesday.

According to 71st Infantry Batallion ground commander 1st Lieutenant Ari Ben Hernaez, they encountered more than 60 members of the Front Committee 27 of the Pulang Bagani Command Six of the NPA.

Hernaez, who was wounded, said the rebels blew up two landmines during the clash.

Soldiers recovered wires and detonator, improvised explosive devices, booby traps, and other personal belongings of the rebels.

Hernaez said the combat operation was conducted in response to residents' concern over the presence of armed rebels in their area.

The wounded soldiers are being treated at the Camp Panacan Hospital, while the slain soldier’s body was taken to the Angel Funeral Homes. - Darlene dela Cruz, ABS-CBN News Davao
