MISAMIS OCCIDENTAL -- One soldier died while 5 others were wounded in two separate clashes between government troops and suspected New People's Army (NPA) rebels in Brgy. Canao-Canao, Bonifacio in Misamis Occidental on Monday, authorities said.
According to 1st Infantry Division information officer Captain Jefferson Mamauag, they received information that there were rebels threatening and extorting money from civilians in the area.
They launched a combat operation against the NPA and a gunbattle ensued after they discovered the rebels' camp.
Another encounter occurred when soldiers met another group of NPAs serving as back-up.
Soldiers overran the camp Tuesday.
The camp had 70 bunk houses and four basketball and volleyball courts.
Some personal items, subversive materials, a grenade, a submachine gun, a sack of food, medical kits and items used in creating landmines were recovered from the camp.
Mamauag believes that some rebels were wounded because they saw traces of blood in the area.
The wounded soldiers are currently being treated in a hospital.
The camp is located in a grassy area that can only be reached by walking for 2 days. -- report from Trini Velasco, ABS-CBN News Northern Mindanao
