MANILA – A soldier died and four of his comrades were injured following an encounter with suspected fighters of the New People's Army (NPA) in Maco, Compostella Valley on Wednesday.
Captain Ernest Carolina, spokesperson of the Philippine Army's 10th Infantry Division, said the encounter between members of the Army's 71st Infantry Battalion and some 60 suspected NPA rebels occurred in Sitio Tagsing in Barangay Panoraon.
Carolina said the military believes that some of the NPA rebels were also killed in the clash.
The rebels involved in today's clash were believed to be from the NPA's Guerrilla Front 27 and Pulang Bagani Company. – report from Edwin Sevidal, dzMM
