Duterte says not running for president
Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte
DAVAO CITY -- Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte thumbed down calls for him to run for president in the May 2016 elections.
Duterte, in his program Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa, said he appreciates the support of his constituents but maintained that he is not interested in running for the country's top post.
He also does not think that he is fit to become president, he said.
"I appreciate the efforts and the support but I am not running for president," Duterte said.
The "Pilipinas Duterte 2016 Movement," which is spearheaded by barangay captains in Davao, is gathering signatures from residents for a petition urging the mayor to join the presidential race.
The group believes Duterte will become a good president since he has done a lot for Davao City.
Meanwhile, the mayor did not say whose candidacy he will support in May 2016.
He, however, expressed support for whoever President Benigno Aquino III decides to be his candidate in 2016. -- Report from Rodirey Salas, ABS-CBN News Davao
